| There are five species of Pacific
Salmon, and all of them migrate annually to the Talachulitna
River.
The first to arrive in mid-June is the mighty Chinook (or
King) Salmon. This big fish is generally taken on large spinning
tackle. However, many flyfishermen have experienced the ultimate
in angling adventure when a King has taken their weighted
streamer fly.
The Sockeye (or Red) Salmon begin arriving the last week
of July. By the first two weeks of August, you can stand knee-deep
in the river surrounded by these swift, brilliant fighters!
The moment a Sockeye strikes, the water explodes with dramatic
action!
The last week of July and throughout August, the Tal is home
again to the Chum and Pink Salmon. The Chum is a large, powerful
fish and provides a thrilling contest. You will marvel at
the sheer number of Pink Salmon which inhabit the Tal. Beginners
and children will have a heyday when nearly every cast produces
a strike!
The entire month of August finds the Coho (or Silver) Salmon
entering the Tal. They are fresh, strong, and of perfect eating
quality. The Silver will strike flies and lures with equal
zest and are truly a sportfisher’s dream come true.
These salmon are well known for their acrobatic leaps and
sizzling runs for deeper pools.
Rainbow Trout and Arctic Grayling:
As the King Salmon begin spawning the last three weeks of
July, anglers will find excellent Rainbow Trout fishing here
on the Tal. Typically, the weather is warm and sunny, creating
perfect water conditions for a memorable fly fishing experience!
During August and September, the Tal is teeming with large
numbers of Arctic Grayling (averaging 14 to 18 inches) content
to strike just about any fly or lure. Dry fly fishing on a
sunny afternoon can produce outstanding results even for the
novice!
September finds the larger (22 to 26 inch) Rainbow Trout,
fat and strong from their summer feeding, aggressively “storing
up” for the long winter ahead. The Rainbow Trout of
the Talachulitna River are wild, native trout famed for their
brilliant crimson markings and distinctive black spots.
Their remarkable speed and endurance earns them great respect
by guests who return yearly to release these beautiful fish
for another day.
As the summer season comes to an end and the leaves turn
vibrant gold, the Tal provides discriminating anglers with
the ideal environment for a solitary, reflective fishing experience
which will be cherished for many years to come.
